Matthew Styles
You could say Matthew’s career was inevitable, born into a musical family in a small seaside town in the west of England, Matthew’s father was also a DJ and so it seemed inevitable that Matthew would take to the decks from an early age. With a pair of Technics in the house as far back as he can remember it seemed only logical that Matthew would take to them like a fish to water.
An early introduction into funk, disco and boogie laid the foundations to Matthew’s DJ’ing, but it wasn’t until and an older friend, who passed Matthew Mix-tapes of legends like Tony Humphries, Bobby Konders, Kenny Carpenter and Steve Hurley, that Matthew knew what he was destined to do. He caught the bug bad and it was only a matter of time before Matthew was regularly playing parties.
Holding his first residency at eighteen, Matthew has since gone on to play some of the finest clubs in the world in the last ten years. From Crosstown Rebels ‘Slash and Burn’ Parties and Berlin’s WMF, to his regular appearances at the Pulp in Paris and Berlin’s Panorama Bar to Stealth in Nottingham and Fabric in London Matthew has wowed crowds with his spellbinding DJing and programming. With a solid appreciation of what the dance-floor needs, an acute sense of taste, and the ability to read the crowd Matthew easily transgresses all house music regardless of trends and age.
Over the past two years Matthew has been resident and the infamous Dig Your Own Rave Sunday parties in London, which he founded. Alongside fellow residents Jamie Jones and Rob Mello the club has attracted guests from the likes of Ellen Allien, Pier Bucci, Shackleton, Villalobos, Craig Richards, Luciano, Prosumer, Baby Ford, Dinky and to name but a few.
As well as being a stupendous DJ and club promoter Matthew is also label Manager for Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebels record label. Matthew has been instrumental in bringing through some of the labels highlights, such as Andre Kraml, Jamie Jones, Hiem and Pier Bucci.
So with all this wealth of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm it was only a matter of time before he found himself in the studio. With a stoic history of production behind him, highlights of Matthew production career include superb remixes for the likes of Music for Freaks, City Rockers, Disco 45 & Catskills and original productions have featured on labels such as Bpitch, Aesoteric and Doc Martins’ FreeStyle imprint.
2006 saw Matthew release his second mix CD after 2003’s critically acclaimed ‘See You @ The Party’ retrospective for Music For Freaks with Jonny Rock. This was Matthew & Damian Lazarus’s ‘Get Lost!’ A tour-de-force through the weird and wonderful, Get Lost! Showcased some of the stranger dance-floor and after-hours sounds they are both well known for. It also kick started the now highly acclaimed mix series with following album by Jamie Jones and Dinky.
Most recently Matthew left London for the heady heights of Berlin, where upon he has established the Berlin branch of Crosstown Rebels. His production has stepped up a gear with the autumn 2007 release of the club smash “Lady Judy” alongside Jamie Jones and Fuckpony on Bpitch Control. He is also releasing a debut sold single on Dinky’s ground breaking Horizontal imprint and his second single cult Diamonds and Pearls Label. He is also currently remixing Zander VT with Jamie Jones for Bpitch.
Obviously with all this action Matthew’s DJ’ing is highly in demand, and has recently played Stealth in Nottinham, Basics in Leeds, Kubikle in London, Fabric with Villalobos, Hawtin, Zip, Craig Richards, Watergate, Panorama Bar and Weekend in Berlin as well as a Santiago Chile, Goa Madrid, and a Mexico tour! How does he fit it all in!
